Abstract:
"In Germany, women still earn less than men. Full-time employed women earned on average 21 percent less than men in 2016. However, this unadjusted gender pay gap considerably varies across regions: Whereas women earn 41 percent less than men in the Bodenseekreis, they earn 4 percent more in Cottbus. Comparing men and women with similar qualifications, jobs and career paths results in the adjusted wage gap. Results show that the adjusted wage gap is smaller in most counties in West Germany and larger in almost all counties in East Germany. In this paper, we examine the regional wage gaps, explore their determinants and show how the regional pattern changes if we control for the different characteristics of men and women."
