Abstract:
The premises behind Task 2 of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA's) Food and Agriculture Program are that the basic agricultural resources will, over a long run time horizon, become more scarce and expensive, that changes in the availability and the relative prices of factor inputs will lead to changes in techniques of production, and that explicit account must be made for environmental consequences and feed backs in land productivity occurring as a result of these changes. In order to identify the broad dimensions of the problem and to obtain general policy guidelines, a series of case studies, formulated in a general methodological framework, have been proposed (Reneau, Van Asseldonk, and Frohberg, 1981).
