Abstract:
In 1986, the Institut Haitien de Statistique et d'Informatique (IHSI) with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) implemented a nationwide Household Expenditure and Consumption Survey (HECS) to gather socioeconomic data to analyze nutrition, health, welfare, food pricing policies, and other issues related to Title III, and to provide IHSI with data to calculate consumer price indexes and national accounts. Data were gathered from November 1986 through September 1987. The 1986-87 HECS gathered data on food and nonfood expenditures including health services and medicines. It also recorded anthropometric statistics for children under five years of age and information on household demographics. This background paper details the health status indicators and health service consumption patterns reported through the survey data. This is one in a series of background, policy, and methods papers produced by the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD), Iowa State University, based on the HECS.
