Department of Economics - Working Papers Series from The University of Melbourne

Abstract: This paper examines the problems of spatial competition in the beekeeping segment of the New Zealand manuka honey industry. Competition between two close apiaries results in negative reciprocal production externalities. A basic geometric model of spatial competition between two apiaries is developed. Various forms of possible management and regulation of the industry are explored, drawing on the experience of management and regulation of production activities with similar externality problems, particularly oil and gas reservoirs, and New Zealand competition policy.
