Abstract: The efficiency of the machine tool industry is central to the overall performance of the European economy. It is the industry which introduces many advanced manufacturing techniques and supplies equipment to the producers who constitute much of the manufacturing base of the European Community. As part of wider research into the effects of the Single Market on British and Germany industry, this paper examines the possible impact of '1992' on the machine tool industry in the two countries. Within the same research project, earlier papers in this series of papers have dealt with the likely effects of the Single Market on the pharmaceutical industry (Discussion paper no. 8), retail sector (Discussion paper no. 6), and insurance sector (Discussion paper no. 18).
