Abstract: This paper investigates the effects of school management on the academic performance of Brazilian students. Using a unique longitudinal dataset that follows pupils from elementary schools from 2005 until 2008, we study the effect of school management on students' achievement in the subjects of Portuguese language and mathematics. By controlling for student, teacher, and school fixed effects, we provide empirical evidence that school management has a positive impact on Portuguese learning, but there is no significant effect on mathematics. We also investigate separately the variables that comprise the school management index and find heterogeneous effects. Our results indicate that differences in managerial practices may be a contributing factor to dissimilarities in test scores among schools.
