Abstract:
The completion of the Single European Market after 1992 is expected to intensify competition generally although different industries will be affected in different ways. The pharmaceuticals industry in Britain and Germany is one of four selected for closer examination. It is clear that effects of '1992' in the form of greater harmonization of drug regulations, more intensive merger and acquisition activity, and increased pressure on price‐cost margins are merely a subset of the many disturbances likely to affect firms in this industry. The agreed extension of effective patent life will help to improve the level and stability of economic performance but because the most valuable British drugs have more unexpired life than their German counterparts, it would appear that in this industry German firms are more vulnerable than British firms to '1992'.
