Abstract:
Financial constraints often limit clean technology adoption in low- and middle-income countries; relaxing these constraints through credit contract design not only increases adoption but also shapes who adopts and how existing and newly adopted technologies are used. We randomize credit contract subsidies and elicit discrete choices over contracts to study firm demand for small-scale solar. Two subsidy designs carry the same amount but differ in allocation across contract terms: one reduces the down payment, while the other can flexibly lower the down payment or near-term repayments.
