Intergenerational education mobility trends in South Africa: Patterns by population group

Nicola Branson and Hagos Ressom

No wp-2026-34, WIDER Working Paper Series from World Institute for Development Economic Research (UNU-WIDER)

Abstract: South Africa's education system remains characterised by high levels of inequality, rooted in a history of racially stratified schooling that created large and persistent differences in educational opportunity across population groups. A central question is whether the expansion of education since the end of apartheid has translated into greater intergenerational mobility, or whether these inequalities continue to shape outcomes.
