(Dis)Empowered by context: female entrepreneurs, institutions and firm performance

Hanna Berkel and Neda Trifković

No wp-2026-36, WIDER Working Paper Series from World Institute for Development Economic Research (UNU-WIDER)

Abstract: Research on gender gaps in firm performance often attributes lower productivity among women-led enterprises to differential access to institutions. This paper examines how interactions with formal and informal institutions relate to enterprise performance in Mozambique, Vietnam, and Myanmar. We combine comparable manufacturing enterprise datasets from these three countries and estimate standard econometric models, including specifications with firm fixed effects, to identify the association between firms' institutional engagement and labour productivity.
