Abstract: In this study, the structure of the Turkish Education System is displayed within a historical background. For this purpose, firstly the meanings attributed to education by the thinkers are elaborated. The social and economic transformations which resulted in the emergence of the structure and institutions of the Turkish Education System are presented since the Tanzimat Period which is accepted as the starting point of the efforts for modern education. The part which includes the period of Ottoman Empire is examined chronologically. The period after the proclamation of the Turkish Republic is analysed in detail and separately for the primary, secondary, vocational, technical, higher and distance education. In the next part, the views on the concept of the Human Capital is considered. In the last part of the study, the relationship between the share of the education in the Gross National Product (GNP) and the growth is analysed by using the method of Markov Chains.
