Entrepreneurial ecosystem and the quality and quantity of regional entrepreneurship: A configurational approach

Abstract: Prior studies have examined possible antecedents of regional entrepreneurship, with most focusing on the net effect of isolated factors that affect entrepreneurship while neglecting their interdependence. From the perspective of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on city-level data from China, this study explores the configurational effect of pertinent factors on entrepreneurial quality and quantity. The results suggest that both entrepreneurial quality and quantity can be created through the interaction between factors and the presence of multiple, equally effective pathways that lead to the same outcomes. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of internet infrastructure and innovation capacity in prompting entrepreneurial quality and quantity; the influence of the size of government expenditure on both high-quantity and quality entrepreneurship was asymmetric. These findings can help policymakers allocate optimal resources in achieving entrepreneurship of high-quality and high-quantity.
