Abstract: In order to improve performance and due to its importance and complexity, retailing is the subject of constant scientific and professional research. One of newer aspects of research is the effects of applying the concept of sustainable development in retail. The concept of sustainable development is treated as a separate strategy of business success in retail. Research has shown that the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in retail is on the lower level in Serbia compared to countries with developed market economies. Nevertheless, it has shown that the impact of retail development on the sustainable development of economy of Serbia is significant. Bearing that in mind, the concept of sustainable development should be effectively implemented in the retail in Serbia in order to improve its overall (environmental, social and economic) performance in the future.
