Farm and Business - The Journal of the Caribbean Agro-Economic Society, 2025, vol. 17, issue 1

Abstract: This study examined the impact of a 38% retaliatory tariff on imports of U.S. chicken in Guyana, in response to the U.S. imposition of a 38% tariff on Guyanese goods. As a small economy, Guyana relies heavily on chicken imports from the U.S. to satisfy domestic demand. The imposition of a retaliatory tariff would significantly affect the cost and availability of imported chicken, leading to higher consumer prices and potential disruptions in supply chains. This research analyzes the economic repercussions of this policy, focusing on changes in import patterns, price volatility, and the broader implications for food security in Guyana. The findings indicate that a 38% retaliatory tariff on U.S. chicken would have a substantial negative impact on imports and welfare. Guyanese importers, being highly price-sensitive, would likely cease importing chicken from the U.S., resulting in decreased availability and higher domestic prices.
