Constraints faced by farmers in marketing of vegetables in peri urban area of Hyderabad

Abstract: The purpose of regulated markets was to promote organised marketing of agricultural commodities in the country and ensure that farmers get a reasonable share in profits but the objective has not been met properly. This study aims to know the constraints faced by farmers in marketing their vegetables in traditional marketing system in APMCs as well as in Rythu Bazaar, a direct marketing system, started by Andhra Pradesh government in 1999. Primary data were collected from 120 vegetable growers selected from two mandals in Ranga reddy district supplying vegetables to the main city of Hyderabad. Ranking of constraints faced by farmers was recorded from the responses of farmers and Garrett's Ranking was calculated. Inadequate price to farmers, interference of middlemen and mal practises were more important problem in traditional system of marketing while in Raythu Bazar lack of space in market and far off location of market were major problems. Number of Rythu Bazars may be increased of mobile vans collecting produce from farm gate and reaching to consumers may be started to address the issues in rythu Bazars.
