Fisheries in Himachal Pradesh: Position and prospects: A case study of fish marketing from pong reservoir in district Kangra of Himachal Pradesh

Abstract: Himachal Pradesh is one of the States amongst a few in the union of India which has been gifted by mother nature with rivers emanating from glaciers which traverse through hilly terrains and inally enrich the semi-plain area of the state with their oxygen rich water. The commercially important fish species in Gobind Sagar and Pong Dam reservoirs, Chamera and Ranjeet Sagar Dam have become a tool for the economic upliftment of local population. About 6, 284 fi shermen depend directly on reservoir isheries for their livelihood. During 2014–15 up to December, 2014, cumulative fi sh production was 6, 479.22 M.T. valued at Rs.5, 474.03 lakh. 100 new trout units are being added in private sector, with the Rs. 50.03 lakh. The reservoirs of Himachal Pradesh have the distinction of highest per hectare ish production in Govind Sagar and highest sale price value of ish catch in Pong Dam in the country. The production of two major reservoirs was 1, 108.096 M.T. valued at Rs.943.40 lakh up to December, 2014. During last year upto December, 2014. 8.61 tonnes table size trout has been sold from the state farms and earning a revenue to the tune of Rs.81.95 lakh.
