Abstract: Research in the area of the living conditions of the cities and communes is important, both from the point of view of residents and local authorities. To improve the residents’ satisfaction with the standard of life in a given unit, fi rst the most important areas have to be diagnosed. The article attempts to compare the living conditions of the rural communes of the Zachodniopomorskie voivodeship. Linear organisation and building of similar typological groups was conducted using the unitarisation zeroed method. Construction of synthetic indicators was performed using two separate sets of diagnostic variables characterising social and economic aspects of rural communes. In addition, rural communes were divided into similar typological groups, both in terms of the highlighted aspects, using a multi-criteria taxonomy. It turned out that in the majority of communes (76%) living conditions were similar. Apart from that the living conditions in various communes dependence on their position in space.
