Morphological transformation of villages incorporated into the city after World War II as exemplified by Łódź

Abstract: The subject of the research are morphological transformations that took place in former villages incorporated into the city after World War II, using the example of Łódź as an example. For the purposes of the article, a comparative analysis of preserved historical maps and contemporary cartographic approaches was conducted. The article uses graph methods and a system for analyzing the city plan based on Conzen's morphological school. Through the prism of selected examples of former villages within the borders of Łódź, a division was proposed, taking into account the scope of changes in the spatial arrangements of settlements and relics of the layout from the period preceding the incorporation into the city. As a result of the research, three main categories of villages were distinguished, characterized by different scales of morphological transformations. The first group includes orthomorphic transformation, when the identified changes were mainly additive, and the historical rural systems were preserved almost completely. The second group includes hypometamorphic transformation, characterized by significant but incomplete reorganization, which results in numerous remnants of the historical layout. The third group concerns metamorphic transformation, when the spatial arrangements of settlements have been completely transformed, preserving at most individual morphological relics from before incorporation. The process of development of built-up areas in former villages incorporated into the city results directly from many conditions. The distance of the settlement unit from the city centre and the moment of incorporation are not the only factors determining the scale of transformation. Depending on the given period, political and planning decisions, communication accessibility, interest of development companies, landscape attractiveness or location of production and service facilities are of significant importance.
