Abstract: Agriculture plays a significant role in the economy of Limpopo Province in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) in terms of production and employment generation for local communities. Most of the people involved in agricultural activities in the region are new farmers and smallholder farmers. The aim of the study was to identify and profile the factors influencing the production and market share of smallholder tomato producers in Madibong and Manganeng villages in Makhuduthamaga Municipality in Sekhukhune District, South Africa. Structured questionnaires were used to collect empirical data from 100 smallholder tomato producers using a purposive sampling technique combined with random sampling. Multiple linear regression and logistic regression models were used to analyze the socio-economic factors influencing tomato production and market share of smallholder tomato producers in the study area. The results of the study showed that access to extension services, fertilizer use, marital status, income from production and use of agricultural equipment positively influenced tomato production. In turn, the level of education, gender, professional experience and marital status of the farmer and the size of the farm had a positive effect on the market share of the surveyed farms. A negative effect of distance on the market share of the surveyed agricultural producers was also identified. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended to create a comprehensive support program for agricultural producers aimed at subsidizing, especially small farmers, when purchasing agricultural production inputs.
