The Aging Process of the Polish Population. Causes and Effects

Eugene Kowalczyk

Village and Agriculture (Wieś i Rolnictwo), 2024, vol. 202, issue 01

Abstract: The beginning of the third decade of the 21st century marked 100 years since the First General Census of the Republic of Poland on September 30, 1921, was conducted in free Poland. It provided a wealth of detailed information on the population inhabiting the lands of the forming Second Polish Republic, including the number and structure by age. Over the course of 100 years, the age structure of Poland's inhabitants (within different borders since World War II) has changed under the influence of both demographic factors (real population movement) and non-demographic factors (war losses, changes in state borders). An unchanging feature resulting from the impact of the above factors, especially in the long term, has been the aging of the population. According to forecasts, this process will continue in the future.
