Abstract:
This study examined the effect of mobile banking on the financial performance of commercial banks in Uganda, using Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited, Kisoro Branch as a case study. Despite the growing adoption of electronic banking services, limited empirical evidence exists on how mobile banking specifically influences financial performance in rural areas such as Kisoro District. The study adopted a descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational research design using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The target population comprised 20 respondents, from whom a sample size of 19 was selected using purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Both primary and secondary data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observation, and document review. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The findings revealed that mobile banking has a positive and significant effect on financial performance, explaining 87.4% of the variation in financial performance. The study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence from a rural banking context in Uganda, supporting the Technology Acceptance Model and Dynamic Capability Theory. The study recommends that management of Stanbic Bank should continue investing in robust and secure mobile banking platforms, improve mobile banking features, reduce transaction charges, and increase awareness campaigns to encourage adoption, especially in rural areas.
