Abstract: Institutions are in essence restrictions to the individual behavior created by the own individuals to allow social interactions. The most promising theoretical and empiric progresses in the study of that theme have been reached in the last years by the New Institutional Economy (NIE), but they are still relatively little known in Brazil, what motivates this thematic review. Besides identifying the methodological principles and the common propositions in its principal works, which define the theoretical space of the NEI, the article try to identify some inadequacies of its classic texts in explaining the historical processes of institutional change, showing, however, as more recent works have tried to turn more convincing the basic interpretative model. Finally the paper suggests as reeaching, with base in NEI, at empirically testable propositions about evolution of both governance structures and institutional matrix of specific societies
