Abstract: The present article looks into a general concept of “institution” in accordance with a wide range of economic theories that may be qualified as institutionalist. The orthodox and heterodox institutionalist economic theories are presented from a viewpoint compatible with this general concept, event though they present divergent theoretical presupposition, resulting from the choice of reductionist or non-reductionist approaches, respectively. Some elements that point to the possibility of developing a shumpeterian and evolutionary theory of institutional change are discussed later on.
