Employment in the euro area in 2012

Abstract: In the second half of 2011 a further period of declining activity ensued in the euro area, which continued and heightened in 2012 and bore down on employment and unemployment developments. According to the member countries’ EPA (Labour Force Survey) figures, the number of employees declined by 0.8% on average last year, following the 0.3% increase recorded a year earlier; and the unemployment rate stood at 11.9% in Q4, the highest ever figure since the creation of the Monetary Union. This article analyses developments in employment, the labour force and unemployment in the euro area in 2012, paying particular attention to those population segments marked by differential behaviour. In this connection, we use information distributed by the European Commission drawing on the Labour Force Survey data collated quarterly by the national statistics institutes of the euro area countries.
