L. D. Taylor: The Man Who Made Vancouver

Abstract: This article examines the valuable work of Louis D. Taylor, an early mayor of Vancouver, with the aim of sorting out the sources of the cloud over his reputation. Taylor was mayor of Vancouver more times than anyone, intermittently, and over a long period—1910 to 1934. In spite of his solid on-the-ground accomplishments and proven electoral popularity, journalists today tend to ignore or dismiss him; historians keep alive doubts about his integrity; and, among the general public, his name is almost unknown. The author attempts to revive interest in and clarify misconceptions about Taylor by examining his long public career as the multi-sided reform mayor of Vancouver.
