Reshaping the city: Does the skyscraper cause the formation of subcenters?

Abstract: This study examines how skyscrapers influence subcenter development in China, using nightlight data and a nonparametric approach to track subcenter growth from 2013 to 2019. Our results indicate that skyscraper construction positively impacts subcenters, especially in medium‐sized cities with populations between 2.5 and 5 million and located over 10 km from central business districts. Additionally, we explore the link between skyscrapers and industry agglomeration economics, finding that new firms are more likely to emerge near skyscrapers, particularly in retail and information sectors. Furthermore, we observe a significant decay rate over distance, highlighting the role of skyscraper agglomeration in fostering subcenters.
