Abstract: The organization and contents of occupational work are significantly changing. Criteria for > work cannot be transferred simply from traditional industrial work to new forms of service, knowledge and freelance work. This research project identifies features of good work from the subjective viewpoint of working people. Using narrative grid-interviews in a comparative approach, we looked at the subjective representations of volunteers about their work. Their experience in voluntary work is contrasted with their experience in other working activities. On this basis we determined similarities and differences between the perception of voluntary and other forms of work. It turned out what the subjective and biographical motives of voluntary work are like. The relation of different work activities to the representation of “ideal” work is illustrated as well.
