Abstract: On the basis of a survey of 534 employed people from 14 rural communities in north-east Germany, we investigated the distribution of effort-reward-imbalances, as well as the significance of burdens due to effort-reward-imbalances for health and life satisfaction. As was expected, after controlling for age, sex and occupational sector, strong interrelationships remained between effort-reward- imbalances and various measures for health and life satisfaction. The comparison with a nationwide survey showed clear specifically regional features in the distribution of highly stressed occupational groups, and also showed a higher overall prevalence of effort-reward-imbalances in the region investigated. We evaluate the results as an example of the added insights which can be obtained with regionally differentiated studies of the relationship between work and health as compared with studies which rely on average national values.
