Abstract: The current economic crisis hit the German machinery manufacturing branch in a situation of extreme boom and caused huge losses of gross profit. During the boom the enterprises were suffering more and more from a lack of qualified specialists such as engineers or technicians. Their economic success was in danger due to the shortage of qualified personnel. Our contribution explains the starting point situation, when the companies of the machinery manufacturing branch plunged into the crisis. We further provide insights into the employment policy of small and medium sized companies during the current crisis.
