Abstract: The rediscovery by labour market policy of the promotion of older employees and job seekers within the framework of the „Initiative 50 Plus“ is primarily justified demographically. With reference to the insufficient rejuvenation or the aging of the population longer work life periods seem virtually incontestable. At the same time a modified (self-)image of the „new seniors” is suggested, according to which the elderly, differing from previous generations, want to be „active“, which also implies that they want to be gainfully employed. The article asks for the validity of these reason cohesions and suggests that the increasing interest of politicians in the employment of elderly people is rather not a matter of labour market policy: Instead, there are primarily fiscal reasons, why there ultimately appears to be no alternative to their accelerated employment in the future.
