Abstract: During the years 2006 and 2010 new framework agreements for pay systems and pay differentiation have been introduced to all bargaining areas of the metal industry in Germany. This chapter provides an overview on the objectives of these changes and analysis the classification and compensation of simple work by looking at Baden-Württemberg as a case study. The chapter first characterizes the basic principles applied to the new system of job evaluation. Subsequently, the meaning of ‚simple work’ is outlined: Which indicators are used for job evaluation and how are job differences transformed into clusters for compensation. In a second step we compare the effects originally intended by the social partners with the real outcome from the up- and downgrading of work as based on the new unit pay scheme, focussing in particular on those jobs rewarded below the level of skilled work.
