Abstract: We report findings from the research project „Women's Career Development in Natural Science’s Research Teams” that consider career conditions of female and male scientists in non-university research institutions. Especially during the career-relevant postdoc phase, female scientists are confronted with problematic working time cultures and precariousness of their employment conditions. Women are more frequently employed on a temporary contract compared to men; particularly women with small children are less likely to meet the expectations of long working hours and permanent availability. Finally, female scientists list the short duration of employment contracts as the key motive for leaving academia.
