Abstract: Within the process of subjectivation in the world of work, the requirements concerning the quality and display of emotions are increasing. The ‘discipline of acting’ turns into a ‘dicipline of being’ – for the employees, this results in emotional dissonance and exhaustion. Against this backdrop, I combine the concepts of emotion work and micropolitics, suggesting ‘strategic surface acting’ as a coping strategy for managing the balancing act between emotional norms and self-care.
