Abstract: Not just in the companies of the IT industry, the digital transformation is increasingly linked to the concept of “cloud.” Wherever companies are currently thinking about disruptive innovations of business models, production models or the organization of work, cloud concepts seem to be an important basis. In this article, we reveal what is behind these discussions about cloud. At first, we develop a sociological understanding of the cloud concept, based on the theory of informatization. Drawing on this understanding, we take a look at current corporate practice. In three case studies we analyze the strategy of a pioneer cloud provider from the Silicon Valley, the transformation of an established global software company as well as the new business strategy of a midsized German industrial company. Two questions are at the centre of the analysis: which role do cloud concepts play in new business strategies and what are the impacts on the organization of work?
