Abstract:
Young engineers need experiential knowledge not only about the work activities in their teams or departments but also experience-based knowledge about the procedures and logics applied by colleagues in other departments. This is especially true for engineers in the equipment construction department which forms a bridge between product development and manufacturing. In order to acquire this knowledge cooperations beyond departments are necessary which are usually not encouraged and often even impeded. The article develops the concept of experience-based context knowledge for this knowledge and learning target, drawing on an empirical study with young engineers from the equipment construction department in a big automotive enterprise. Object-related and cooperation-related context knowledge are differentiated in four dimensions respectively: product, process, culture and social action.
