Abstract: From the perspective of subject-oriented labor research, this paper investigates the question how self-employed persons interpret the early stage of the Corona pandemic and how they respond to the crisis. To this end, a total of 40 interviews were conducted in summer and fall 2020 with self-employed persons from three sectors (crafts and trades, culture, coaching). The paper reveals that the self-employed are confronted with a strong market dependency across their respective sectors, making the experience that their plans and future projections are called into question. Although all interviewees respond in a similar way to the challenges of transforming their self-employment, sector-related inequalities concerning their chances to cope with the crisis in a meaningful way are striking. Thus, the paper is able to enrich the current debate about inequality effects of the Corona crisis from the perspective of qualitative reconstruction of meaning.
