Abstract: The platform economy has seen a rapid growth in the recent past and enables well trained cloud workers to generate income by working online across national boundaries. They act as freelancers and are not necessarily picked up by national systems of income taxes or social security. By the intentional or unintentional failure to declare income and pay the corresponding contributions, cloud workers become guilty of undeclared work. This contribution investigates for a sample of 47 international platforms if and how contracting cloud workers receive support in complying with tax and social security regulations of their home countries. While numerous platforms try to counter undeclared work, about 40 percent of them do not make any recognizable efforts in this respect.
