Abstract: The ongoing digitalization of work is associated with both hopes for increasing participation opportunities for employees and workplace representatives and fears and threats regarding new control potentials and possibilities for rationalization of work. Based on the approach that digitalization can be shaped, the article deals with questions of participation possibilities of works councils and employees in the digitalization process on the basis of empirical research results in companies actively pursuing digitalization. Field-specific forms of participation, their scope, quality, as well as the company actorsʼ participation interests are described. In addition, a characteristic interplay of direct and indirect participation is identified, which prevents gross violations of labor interests.
