Abstract:
Females have on average lower wages than males because they occupy less paid jobs. We present the main explanations given by the literature to this stylized fact: the existence of taste and statistical discrimination, as well as gender differences in labor supply. We then explain how previous works have measured the access of females to best paid jobs. After showing their limits, we propose a new approach based on a model where males and females are assigned to job positions along the wage distribution.
