Abstract:
This article accounts for a thorough empirical study of management of the fire-fighting by a military elite unit: the Fire Brigade of Paris. It underlines the interest of a reading crossing the literatures on extreme situations and on high reliability organizations and then it highlights the role of rules in situations of fire-fighting and the capacity of the organization to learn from the unforeseen situations met by the fire brigade. Then it shows the role of the discipline ? such as Foucault analyses it ? in order to understand how reliability and flexibility get articulated.
