Technical Report: Sales Data in the SSEL and the Economic Census

Abstract:
The Julia Lane ASA fellows project highlights the value added of linked employer-employee microdata. The employer data used in this project is from the SSEL and the Economic Census, with information concerning the firm's employment, payroll, industry, and sales. Our analysis is, to the best of our knowledge, the first to use the sales data for the universe of firms in all sectors of the economy. Quite a bit of work went into our work with the sales data from the SSEL and the Economic Census. This technical report details some of the problems that we encountered with the sales data on the SSEL and the Economic Census, and how we went about creating an analytic dataset that we feel comfortable enough to use in our analysis. This document should not be considered a thorough documentation of the sales data - we were under time constraints in our analysis, and many issues with the sales data were ignored. The purpose of this technical report is to provide a reference of known problems and first-pass solutions so that future users of the sales data can save time.
