Evan Taylor, Bryan Stuart and Martha Bailey

CES Technical Notes Series from Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau

Abstract: This document describes the algorithm used to match the listed place of birth from the NUMIDENT file to a physical location (in particular, a county) in the United States. In short, the algorithm links the Social Security Administration (SSA) NUMIDENT file, which contains self-reported information on individuals’ birthplace, to administrative data on the universe of recognized places in the U.S.
