CES Technical Notes Series from Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau

Abstract: This technical note details the harmonization of variable names for Internal Revenue Service (IRS) individual Form 1040 data. The Census Bureau Data Warehouse holds SAS data files for the IRS Form 1040 data for 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, and 2000. While these data contain the same type of content—individual tax return records for each of the listed filing years—the variables are not consistently named, making longitudinal analyses difficult. We therefore created a SAS program to rename variables that occur in multiple files but have different names. This SAS program in named irs_i1040_data_harmonization.sas.
