Recovering Work-Limiting Disability Variables in the 1980s Current Population Survey

Abstract: Disability status has been elicited systematically in United States surveys as far back as the 1970s and was included in the March Supplement of the Current Population Survey starting in 1981. Unfortunately, work-limiting disability status variables are only available in public and restricted data starting in 1988. This technical memo walks through the process of recovering those missing disability status variables as well as the process of linking them to the internal CPS data at the individual-level through a series of unique identifiers.
