Health Insurance Payer Mix Map of Wyoming

Franz S. Fuchs

CES Technical Notes Series from Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau

Abstract: This memo describes how small-area (Census Block Group) estimates for health insurance coverage can be produced using Bayesian hierarchical Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) fitted on pooled American Community Survey data. It describes how: • Time-varying geographies in pooled data can be standardized; • A single “primary†health insurance variable is recoded using multiple ACS variables and overlapping insurance coverages; • Various models are fit and evaluated using demographic and geographic variables; • Disclosure risk is minimized; and, • The final product can be used to generate post-stratified estimates, with associated uncertainty, in conjunction with publicly-available Decennial Census data.
