Labour Rights Violations, Exports and Income Per Capita

Abstract: We examine how the impact of exports of goods and services on income per capita varies depending on the extent of labour rights violations in the export sector. In a sample of low- and middle-income countries, we find that specialising in sectors with high labour rights violations tends to reduce per capita income, due to lower productivity in those sectors. The negative impact of specialising in sectors with high labour rights violations is stronger in middle-income countries than in low-income countries.
