Das Ende der Landwirtschaftlichen Tretmühle: Implikationen für Welternährung, Klimaschutz und Biodiversität

Abstract: The long term trend of declining agricultural commodity prices has come to an end. Since the turn of the millennium prices have gone up as global demand growth has outstripped the growth in supply. As a consequence hunger around the globe is growing as the expansion of the agricultural acreage through deforestation and the conversion of pasture into crop land. This, in turn, leads to increasing losses of natural habitats and acts to increase agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Already today the expansion of the agricultural area contributes more to global warming than global manufacturing. Therefore, innovation and productivity growth in agriculture permits the world to have more food, bioenergy, climate protection, more biodiversity and more natural habitats. Der mehr als 100 Jahre währende Trend sinkender Preise für Agrarrohstoffe ist zu Ende gegangen. Seit der Jahrtausendwende steigen die Agrarpreise, weil die Nachfrage weltweit stärker steigt als das Angebot. Die veränderte Weltmarktentwicklung führt zu einer Zunahme des Hungers in der Welt und zu einer weiteren Ausdehnung der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzflächen durch Entwaldung und die Umwandlung von Gras- in Ackerland. Dies wiederum trägt bereits heute mehr zum Klimawandel bei als die weltweite Industrieproduktion. Durch Innovation und Produktivitätswachstum in der Landwirtschaft kann sich die Welt daher mehr von allem leisten: mehr Nahrung, mehr Bioenergie, mehr Klimaschutz, mehr Biodiversität und mehr natürliche Lebensräume.
