Science to the Rescue: Lösungsansätze aus der Forschung für einen Wandel hin zu einem nachhaltigen Finanzsystem

Abstract: The financial system is central to our sustainable transition and has the potential to act as a catalyst. To embrace this role, finance needs to move beyond current practices and implement wide ranging reforms. This paper provides insights on Greenwashing in the financial sector, points to current policy developments and highlights practice-oriented research in the field of sustainable finance. Based on current research, recommendations for both practitioners and policymakers are provided. Regulatory actions to limit the widespread practice of greenwashing are outlined, including the need for an institution to monitor sustainability reporting to ensure protection of consumers of financial products. As for practitioners, investors aiming to have an impact should focus on primary markets and debt capital. In this context, the potential of sustainability-linked bonds is discussed and benefits for issuing firms outlined. Das Finanzsystem ist zentraler Bestandteil der Weltwirtschaft und hat das Potenzial, als Katalysator des Wandels hin zu einer nachhaltigen Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft zu fungieren. Um dieser Rolle gerecht zu werden sind jedoch die Abkehr von bisherigen finanziellen Praktiken und weitgehende Reformen des Finanzsystems nötig. Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich spezifisch mit dem Phänomen Greenwashing im Finanzsektor, verweist diesbezüglich auf aktuelle Entwicklungen im Policy Bereich und hebt praxisrelevante Forschung im Bereich Sustainable Finance hervor. Auf der Basis aktueller Forschung werden schließlich Empfehlungen für Politik und die Wirtschaft ausgesprochen. Für die Politik werden regulative Schritte skizziert, mit denen dem Greenwashing im Finanzsektor schrittweise Schranken gesetzt werden können. Zudem wird eine Kontrollinstitution für Finanzprodukte und nachhaltige Finanzberichterstattung vorgeschlagen, die effektiven finanziellen Verbraucherschutz betreibt. Akteuren in der Finanzindustrie wird empfohlen, vermehrt den Primärmarkt und die Fremdkapitalfinanzierung ins Auge zu fassen. Das diesbezügliche Potential von Sustainability-Linked Bonds (SLBs) wird erörtert und deren Vorteile zudem aus Firmenperspektive beleuchtet.
