A directional technology convergence index

Abstract: Technology heterogeneity has been highlighted as an important feature in many fields in economics. We suggest a new index that measures technology convergence over time. Our index is flexible and easy to interpret, compute and aggregate. In particular, nonparametric estimation can be used and the practitioners can select the direction of the technology convergence investigation. We illustrate the usefulness of our new index with the case of the technology clubs in macro-empirics.
