Abstract: The characteristics of chaotic emission waveforms from semiconductor lasers play a critical role in a variety of applications. In this work, we present and experimentally validate an energy-redistribution method to manipulate the chaotic emission waveforms of optically injected semiconductor lasers. By applying temporal phase modulation followed by dispersive propagation, the chaotic waveform can be transformed into either chaotic pulse trains or optical rogue waves by tuning the energy redistribution parameters. This mechanism is verified numerically under fixed laser conditions and subsequently demonstrated experimentally using different master–slave laser configurations chosen to meet practical bandwidth and dispersion constraints. These results confirm that the proposed method offers a robust and practical means for tailoring the temporal structure of the laser chaotic emissions, opening new avenues for manipulating the chaotic emission waveforms of semiconductor lasers in emerging photonic applications.
